Fluency is a video explainer describing the journey a student takes towards literacy (work in progress)
This suite of three modules uses written content, documentary style interviews, and scenario based learning to educate all NSW health staff as to the strategies to identify child abuse as well as ways to help protect children at risk.
With aesthetics taking a back seat, the challenge in delivering the content was fourfold: adding coherence and consistency to large amounts of content; making the interface clear, accessible and engaging to the varying demographics the NSW health workforce; and working within the technological constraints of NSW health infrastructure.
With accessibility in mind, we stripped away all unnecessary elements, and tried to focus on basic user interface principles: colour hierarchy and keying; title hierarchy, chunking and keying of information and information architecture.
The scenarios used photography and dialogue to drive the engagement, with the language of cinematography to reinforce the storytelling, emotion and meaning through the visual.
Behind the scenes, with tight deadlines and multiple film and photoshoots, the other major challenge was to construct a modular process to ensure the over 200 photos worked with for the scenario based layouts. A templated call sheet style document was created to align communication between the producer, photographer and visual designer, which was successful in allowing the composition of shots to work across all layouts.
ROLE: Visual and UI design, Art direction for photoshoots.
The COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT OF A WELL NEWBORN module is a training module reinforcing best practice when assessing newborn babies.
Working with a dedicated anatomical illustrator as well as a photographer, the module contains interactive diagrams, as well as a rich variety of photos and video.
ROLE: Visual and UI design, art direction for illustrations and photoshoots.
QDAI is a video explainer used to describe the process of collecting and analysing data. The brief was to create a caricature of a staff member and use him as the central character to tell the story of the team’s process and methodology (work in progress).
Other than the learning, the intent of this module was to demonstrate to government staff that eLearning could be more than a 'powerpoint' style module, and that there are possibilities to make learning experience more engaging, interactive and visually driven.
Existing content was reorganised to form an interactive journey, with an interactive isometric map as a central visual metaphor and anchoring device for navigation.
Learner's knowledge of the content is tested at points in the journey, via gamified activities, such as multiple choice questions and interactive activities.
Role: project management, instructional design consultation, UI and UX design, illustration, animation.
FINALIST: eLearning Excellence Awards 2015
A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT is a training tool for generalist nurses to learn the correct procedures to assess, treat and transfer patients in a rural hospital environment.
With a large amounts of content, the challenge was to design a user experience that simplified and clarified the process involved in assessment. Also challenging, was working within the limited technical framework available within NSW Health.
The hierarchy and structure of the user interface was designed in a way that followed the structure and order of the assessment procedure. Illustrations and animations were used to humanise and give some visual context to very process driven content.
ROLE: Concept collaboration with instructional designer, illustration of all game assets including isometric art, animation and user interface design.
GOLD AWARD - LearnX Impact Awards 2017 for Best Game Design
SILVER AWARD - Brandon Hall Group Excellence in Learning Awards 2017
FINALIST - Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (Australasia) 2017
This video explainer was created as a resource, to clarify and improve the project process both with HETI and it's wider NSW Health client base, to both explain the project processes involved, as well as to explain the role subject matter experts play in the creation of content.
ROLE: Storyboarding, illustration, animation.
The Pain Assessment and Pain Management modules explore ways medical staff assess and treat pain.
With an awareness that Health Staff at times found training to be a bore, the brief was to use illustration and graphics to add a sense of fun to a dry and somewhat uncomfortable topic. With this in mind, where possible, humour was added in the illustrations.
ROLE: project management, instructional design consultation, visual design and illustration, UI design.
The Cold Chain Management module uses interactive video as to create a learning journey that outlines the procedures and processes necessary to ensure the proper transport and storage of vaccinations.
In terms of user experience, the learning module was an exploration of one way of making learning more engaging, whilst looking how interactive video could be used.
ROLE: Concept collaboration, visual and UI design, video consultation.
With a request for a illustrated comic style module, the task was to not only illustrate and create the interface design, but also to guide in realigning the written content into a narrative, visually driven piece.
In terms of storytelling, content called upon cues from both comic strip layout and cinematography. This related both to the framing and cropping of images, as well as considering how each image would work together to form a coherent and engaging narrative.
ROLE: instructional design consultation and collaboration, project management; visual design and illustration; UI design.
Working with existing branding, the brief was to create a video explainer from a written script.
Central to this animation was incorporating the branding into visual metaphors, as well as using the symbol of the "loading heart" as a metaphor for improving care.
ROLE: storyboarding, design, illustration, animation.
Shot over 15 years ago on now what could be now called "vintage" digital video, Tides is an ode to a French summer day, surfing, friends and the passing of time.
With the ocean being both timeless and mirroring the ebb and flow of time, and the activity of surfing being transient and fleeting in itself, slow fades, and layered images staggered in time were used to see if this feeling could be achieved.
Images, of the sun, of children, and jet streams of high flying aircraft were added - archetypal images that hint of things to give a sense of familiarity.
ROLE: Concept, videographer, editing
Using footage from old black and white films, this video projection was created as a large video projection as part of the first Iranian Dance Music festival night.
The project was an exercise in editing, playing with speed, time, and repetition to try create a non narrative backdrop which was fun, but not intrusive to the real action on the dance floor.
ROLE: footage sourcing and video editing.
Created while working in a dedicated games agency, these casual games incorporated illustrated and animated game assets and live action video.
ROLE: illustration, animation.
